To confirm and add to the info given by Mowax, the ME1 supports the Realtek RTL8187B chipset, so any dongle which uses this chipset (like the Micronet SP907GK V6 discussed in previous posts) should be ok. The cheapest one I could find was this Belkin F5D7050E (£11 including postage) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250480897239&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I suppose that Realtek chipset support isn't surprising since the ME1 is based on the Realtek RTD1261 chip, plus I see that the hardware/firmware of other similar multimedia boxes and PVRs (Emtec, Astone, Sumvision) also support dongles with this same chipset for wireless....

Be aware that there is also a RTL8187L version of this chipset which will probably work (can anyone confirm these?). This L version is very popular with wireless network hackers, so any 'L' dongles are usually snapped up fast if they appear.

If you already have another dongle and wish to check the chipset, this can be found by googling the FCC number or the make and model. The chipset info can also be found at the start section of the .inf file in the driver installation files for a dongle (or other device), which can be opened using notepad. - Or just take off the cover and read the number off of the main chip!

Good luck!

Going through the router as per wired connection. Entered SSID as auto didn't pick up any wireless networks and then you get "Test Failed".

Could be the dongle but the other half's Monday Corrie/Eastenders/Corrie/ etc put paid to any further investigation. :)

Will try the dongle with my netbook to be sure that it's working and start again from scratch.

Also check the EXACT chipset details ;)

About the Wireless issues : Maybe there is some kind of MAC Address filter active that you don't know about ?

The best thing about the ME1 is its playaboutability ( i just made that up), it really is hard to break it so just mess with it and find out.

Chipset? :? ..............Realtek RTL8187B :)

Check router (D-Link), no MAC filtering or hidden SSID. WEP key correct (although should see wireless network regardless)

:x ERROR....."Test Failed", cannot find SSID. Even put dongle on USB extension to get it up away from TV etc but nought!!! :|

Aaaaaaaaaaargh

Help??

Update
Tried the dongle in the PC and it works fine, nice green flashing light........ :? Never noticed that when plugged into the ME-1???

 No LED when plugged into the ME-1, so could be that no 5V being pushed out on the USB, hence dongle not powered?? But I could do all the config stuff in setup. Will need to see if you can edit those fields without a dongle connected. :|

Tichell-

I have been away from home since Christmas and have only now had a chance to begin to play properly with my ME1.

After trying things out, I was annoyed to find that although the Belkin dongle has the correct chipset, and in theory should work, it does NOT seem to work with my ME1. I have now also just bought a Micronet SP907GK V6 (same chipset) which does work as reported by others here.

Both dongles work fine in my Window laptop, and they both use the same XP driver. I can only guess that the Linux operating system in the ME1 is more fussy about USB device identification. The Micronet shows as a RTL8187B device, but the Belkin as 'Belkin wireless G usb adapter'. Here are my two dongles side by side.

At first I did not think that the Micronet dongle was going to work either because the ME1 reported that it couldn't see any SSIDs, although it was in the same room as my wireless router. But when I manually entered my SSID (and password) it connected (hooray!). If your router has a 'pairing' button you will probably also need to press it for the ME1 to be able to connect.

The led on the dongle is on continuously with no flasing for data transfer once it has been recognised by the ME1 -even when the ME1 is on standby (front light at red). -Not good for energy saving... Seems to me it would also be useful to be able to turn off the ME1 hard drive when you are just streaming from other network drives...

Anyhow, hope this helps... Good luck.
